If you've found us, you're probably wondering two things. First can Pediatric Chiropractic care help my child? And secondly, how does it even work? Well you are not alone! Lots of moms, dads, and caregivers are looking for hope and answers, backed by science that will help them with all the stress and struggle our kids and families are confronted with.
To answer both these questions, we first have to go back and look at why our kids are struggling in the first place. In today's world tons of stressors can overwhelm us. To organize and bucket where this stress comes from we often refer to it as coming from 3 main areas, Physical, Chemical and Emotional.
Although, bumps, falls and wrestling matches are often what comes to mind with our kids when we think of physical stress. Actual physical stressors start much earlier, most commonly researched as starting during the prenatal or birth process. In fact, we go in-depth and explain the science behind this in our Perfect Storm and Delivered workshops.
In addition to physical stressors, our kids live in a busier, more complex generation than we did. Schedules are packed, social media is everywhere, and food quality isn't what it used to be. Simply put, we have more coming from every direction, and all combined, it can be overwhelming!
The more 'stressors' that build up, the harder it is for our bodies to adapt and overcome this overwhelm and our kids' nervous systems get stuck on the gas pedal.
When you think of Chiropractic you probably first think of the spine and back but It's helpful to think of the spine as not just a collection of bones, muscles, and ligaments, but instead as an entire neurological "organ" that is the key communication highway between brain and body. When the brain and body can communicate well, kids can adapt to their surroundings better. Adapting is a key word, and why Chiropractic is so helpful to kids. Especially kids who struggle with sensory, hyperactivity (ADHD), immune, and/or digestive challenges.
All of these challenges are rooted in our autonomic or "automatic" nervous system. A system that is easily overwhelmed when the body is in stress. To get into a bit of the science. This autonomic system operates on two frequencies, the sympathetic or the para-sympathetic. The sympathetic system is designed to work during "stressful" moments and drives the body to "go, go, go." The Para-sympathetic system is designed for the exact opposite, it is meant to activate calm, relaxation, sleep, immune function and digestion. We nickname this the "brake" pedal, it balances the go, go, go. When our kids can better adapt while under chiropractic care, the Para-sympathetic system helps the body "refuel" for when it needs to handle stress. However, as what is often the case with extra stress, kids nervous systems get 'stuck' in the sympathetic system and can't turn it off. Basically, the gas pedal (sympathetic side) is overworking and the break pedal (para-sympathetic side) is worn down. When this happens the body-brain communication gets confused and stuck. The scientific term for this is Subluxation. An easy way to simply think of Subluxation is "Stress Stuck On."
This is where the Chiropractic Adjustment comes into play. Adjustments help re-activate and rejuvenate that brake pedal (para-sympathetic side) so the body can calm, relax, sleep, activate immunity and digestive processes. Adjustments remind the body where it needs to be for optimal growth and development. In the long term, Chiropractic care allows kids nervous systems to not be overwhelmed, adapt to stress and thus conquer many challenges on their own, even before the nervous system gets into that "stress stuck on" pattern. Pretty cool right? Now you can see why we absolutely LOVE what we get to do at PWC!!
A common question is what these adjustment looks like and that's the exciting part! The nervous system of a child is more sensitive than that of an adult. Thus kids adjustments are different than adult adjustments. Our Doctors are all trained and certified in gentle, neurologically focused ways to adjust kids from newborn all the way to teenager.
We know that if you're looking into Pediatric Chiropractic for the first time you probably still have questions, and that's perfect! The moms and dads on our staff would love to connect to help you on your journey or connect you to meet our team at one of our community events!
